Englert Inc. metal roofing systems can be found on transit stations throughout New York and New Jersey. One such station is located on the campus of Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ. The station’s construction was the result of a collaborative effort between the university, the New Jersey Transit Authority and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. It was established to provide a new station and parking facility to better serve students and area commuter populations using the MidTOWN DIRECT rail service on the New York to Boonton Line.
The new station and parking deck are located across the Boonton Line tracks from the Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls. The station consists of an 800’-long center island, high-level platform with canopies, a bus and automobile pickup/drop-off area in front of the station, and other amenities. The parking deck contains spaces for approximately 1,500 vehicles and is connected to the station via a pedestrian overpass served by elevators and stairs.
The platforms of the new station were covered with 14,000 sq. ft. of 16”-wide Englert Series 2500 standing seam roofing panels in a Colonial Red color. The stairwells and adjacent parking garage were capped with 7,500 sq. ft. of 16”-wide Englert Series 2000 panels. Approximately 1,000 sq. ft. of Englert’s Series B4000 soffit panels were used in the parking structure. All of the products were fabricated and installed by Custom Exterior Systems of Sloatsburg, NY.
George Hibbs, AIA, was the partner-in-charge of the project for Clarke Caton Hintz Architects, the Trenton, NJ-based firm responsible for the design. He said the Colonial Red metal roofing proved an ideal addition to the project. “The design required a delicate aesthetic balance between complementing the Spanish Mission style of surrounding campus architecture, and meeting the more contemporary design requirements of the parking and rail program,” Hibbs said. “The standing seam metal roofing and the metal panel system of the pedestrian bridge, train platform and garage provided us with products that allowed us to successfully achieve these goals.”
