In looking for an architectural feature to add a touch of traditional charm to a building with contemporary appeal, Floline Architectural Systems' eye-catching cornice system was the perfect solution for architect Rick Keith of Wolgast Corporation, Freeland, Mich.

Keith designed the Executive Arts Two Building in Saginaw, Mich. with a curved panel cornice having never before incorporated a concave panel into one of his designs. "I have a lot of experience with convex panels, especially on store fronts," he said. "The cornice application was something new for me, and I liked the unique look it gave the building. The design is much different from other structures in the community."

Keith ran across a photograph of a similar cornice in Floline's Sweet's Brochure (2nd photo at left) and knew it was an excellent match for his design. The building incorporates 5,600 square feet of Floline Series 900 panels fabricated from 22-gauge G-90 galvanized steel. The panels are coated with Lilly's Platinum Visulure 2 and a metalescent Kynar 500 1.0 mil finish. The reverse side of the panel has a 0.5 mil standard polyester coating. Neatly mitered corners provide a smooth transition from face to face.

Floline's panel also was used for roof screen walls to conceal rooftop equipment that is visible from street level. The use of the panel on the screen walls offers continuity to the overall design of the building.

Wolgast opted to use a metallic finish on the panel because it draws attention to the cornice - especially on sunny days - and provided the unique look they desired. "In fact," Keith stated, "many residents in the community have commented on how impressed they are with the look the cornice gives the building."

Wolgast worked together with Floline's experienced staff to design a structural support system for the cornice. "A lot of time was spent detailing the drawings and putting up the steel outlookers to make sure the cornice was perfectly level all the way around the building," Keith continued. "With Floline's help, everything went together smoothly, and I'm very pleased with the final outcome."
