Just shy of their 75th year in business, Charter Oak Federal Credit Union was looking to expand — and a brand new headquarters was part of its strategy. Known for being more than just a bank, Charter Oak wanted the new building to be a source of civic pride. With the help of Point One Architects and Kingspan Insulated Panels, they succeeded.

An $18 million budget was established for the construction of the institution's new 65,000 sq. ft., four-story home in Waterford, CT. It incorporates top-of-the-line design features and is protected from air and water infiltration by Kingspan's KarrierPanel ™ acclaimed barrier wall system.

Charter Oak's new home is located two hours south of its former Massachusetts location. The new building is within sight of two main highways, making it an easy reach for prospective new customers. Ground was broken for the project in late 2012.

The project's design specified the insulation and vapor barrier wall system be placed outside the building's framing. Ultimate Construction LLC was hired to handle that aspect of the project. As a frequent installer of Kingspan products, the firm was at ease with the architect's decision to utilize Kingspan's KarrierPanel system to get the insulation, barrier and backing all in one.

One of the many benefits to utilizing Kingspan products on the project was the KarrierPanel system's ability to be installed horizontally or vertically. Another was economy. Ultimate Construction's Senior Estimator Tony Morin notes that KarrierPanel is "cost effective compared to the competition’s insulation and material costs,” which made it an easy go-to for this project.

In addition to the flexibility and cost cutting measures, the Karrier System offers quick installation and eliminates the potential for construction delays that can occur when multiple trades are required to install similar components individually. The building's exterior design incorporates both brick and meta claddings and the 3"-thick KarrierPanel™ assembly was installed behind both.

The prevention of air leakage ensures the building's comfort and efficiency. And keeping moisture out means none of the issues related to infiltration, including structural damage and mold.

The new building is designed for the comfort of its employees and the convenience of the community. In addition to corporate offices, the building functions as a branch bank and call center. It has training rooms, a board room and wellness center and a community space for use by the civic organizations of Waterford.

Charter Oak's Chief Executive Officer, Brian A. Orenstein, described the significance of the institution's big move, stating, “This building represents a new era of growth for Charter Oak. And it will serve as an important symbol of our strength and our service to our members for many years to come.”

Orenstein believes the new headquarters “reflects who [they] are today — a strong, vibrant institution serving the financial needs of eastern Connecticut.”
