As the result of funding from federal, state and city governments, along with American Recovery Act assistance, the City of Jackson, Tennessee recently constructed a new transit facility through the assistance of a general contractor - Hoyt Hayes Construction – working exclusively with American-made products. It only seems appropriate that those products were supplied by American Buildings Company (ABC), a Nucor company and leading manufacturer of high-quality metal building systems.

The $3.3 million Jackson Transit Authority facility contains administration offices, bus and van maintenance, and fueling operations. The main portion of the new complex is an enclosed structure that is comprised of a lower height office area at the front, and a higher gabled area at the rear that houses maintenance bays for transit authority vehicles; the entire structure is clad with split-faced block walls, complemented by blue metal mansard panels on the maintenance area. Situated to the side is an open, taller building that is used for the fuel canopy.

The shop/office building measures 60’ wide x 260’ long with a 20’ eave height and a roof pitch of 2:12. The fuel canopy is 51’-4” x 51’-8” x 22’-0”, with a 2:12 roof pitch. Tapered column framing was used throughout the facility.

ABC's Standing Seam II panels were selected for the roof of the Jackson Transit Authority facility; the 24-gauge panels feature a SmartKote P70 finish in a Regal Blue hue. On the walls of the maintenance facility, the split-faced block is complemented by ABC's Long Span III panels; they were also formed from 24-gauge steel with a SmartKote P70 finish in Regal Blue. The project included 54 special skylights, each measuring 48"x48", as well as one 48" x 48" roof hatch.

ABC's WeatherSure warranty added a level of assurance that will be appreciated by the City of Jackson for years to come.

Hoyt Hayes Construction of Jackson, TN, was the authorized ABC Builder. The project architect was Jerry Hartsfield, AIA, and the team at TLM Associates, Inc. of Jackson, TN.

City Of Jackson Receives “Proud To Buy American” Award

ABC honored the city of Jackson for choosing American-made steel in the construction of the Jackson Transit Authority. On March 18, 2011, Kevin Cook of ABC and representatives from Hoyt Hayes Construction presented Johnny Gullet, general manager of the Jackson Transit Authority, with a “Proud to Buy American” plaque.

With funding coming from the Federal Transit Administration, the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the city of Jackson, and with American Recovery Act assistance, the city was required to select a general contractor who works exclusively with American products. Hoyt Hayes Construction was chosen after an extensive bid process because of their dedication to American products and proven track record of construction quality.

“This building has been greatly anticipated by the Jackson community and we were honored to be chosen as the general contractor,” said Josh Hayes of Hoyt Hayes Construction. “Constructing metal buildings made of American steel inspires an immense sense of pride within our company.”

By choosing an authorized ABC Builder and a metal building system in the construction of the transit authority, the city of Jackson, in conjunction with Hoyt Hayes Construction, is helping to safeguard American jobs. Selecting an ABC metal building system also provides a green, environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional construction. In the current economic environment, ABC and its Builders have a unique opportunity to highlight business decisions which promote growth of the construction industry and products made in America.

“Presenting the ‘Proud to Buy American’ award and reading the words inscribed on the plaque to the city, state, and federal officials left me feeling honored to supply such a great product to our Builders,” said Kevin Cook, District Sales Manager at ABC.
