There will be no rain delays at the new Qizhong International Tennis Center in Shanghai, China, thanks to an innovative roof design that enables the building to be closed-in on demand.

The 15,000-seat tennis stadium was designed by Japanese architect Mitsura Senda of the Environmental Design Institute (EDI) of Tokyo. For the roof’s unique three-dimension design the firm used Kalzip aluminum standing seam roof panlels.

In addition to being retractable, the roof of Asia’s largest tennis stadium is also visually striking. Simulating the petals of a flower, some 162,000 sq. ft. of Kalzip 65/400 stucco-embossed aluminum panels were used to construct the eight separate roof segments, which can fully open or close in eight minutes.
