It was a project tailor-made for VICWEST’s Allmet stone-coated steel roofing.

As part of an ambitious residential remodel, a Canadian homeowner turned a one-story home into a two, and changed its style from classic bungalow to Spanish mission.

In completing a true-to-style transformation, the owner chose brick and stucco for the home’s new exterior walls and tile for the roof. But stone-coated steel was chosen over authentic clay or concrete for two basic reasons: weight and longevity.

The original home was able to carry the load of a second story but the added weight of clay or concrete on top of that would’ve also required additional structural reinforcement. From a product performance standpoint, there was a question about how tile would hold up in the cold Canadian climate. Both concerns were addressed by choosing stone-coated steel tile as an alternative.

The project, located in Caledonia, Ontario, took 30 squares of Allmet’s stone-coated material to complete. The product is manufactured by Allmet Roofing Products of Courtland, Ontario, and distributed by VICWEST. The local dealer was Slack Lumber of Empires Corners, Ontario.

The roofing panels were stamped from Galvalume-coated steel and top-coated with acrylically bonded 3M Colourquartz™ granules to produce an Autumn Gold variegated color.
