Goldwin Smith Hall Reroof

Snow Management Products From Alpine SnowGuards Selected For Use On Historical University Facility

A reroof project at historic Goldwin Smith Hall on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY included the installation of four types of snow management products from Alpine SnowGuards.

Goldwin Smith Hall is described as a three story Beaux Arts building, which was originally built in 1893 as the Dairy Building for Cornell. The structure is faced with rough-cut ashlar stonework, and features symmetrically balanced facades; the entrance consists of a gabled porch with an arch opening supported by columns on pedestals. In 1903, Goldwin Smith Hall was added to the south end of the Dairy Building. The building façade is classically derived and features a freestanding portico with four columns.

The recent reroof/renovation, utilizing Vermont Structural Slate and Revere Copper, began in November 2013 and was completed in May 2015. The roofing contractor for the 58,065 sq. ft. project was Charles F. Evans Co. Inc. of Elmira, NY.

Alpine SnowGuards models used on the Goldwin Smith Hall reroof project are:

• PP325 three-pipe snow management system in both brass with brass accessories and stainless steel with stainless steel accessories.

• ASG33 standing seam pad-style snow guards in custom stainless steel and brass.

• PD10 pad-style snow guards in copper.

• PD30 pad-style snow guards in copper.

About Alpine SnowGuards®

Established in 1993 and employee owned, Alpine SnowGuards designs, engineers and manufactures 50+ snow and solar snow management systems for all roof types, new or retrofit, from its facilities in Morrisville, VT. Alpine’s 11 snow guard designs for “clamp-to-seam” systems utilize round-point set screws to avoid damaging roof panels, allowing for a firm hold all winter long while keeping snow in its place. Alpine’s 8 products for corrugated metal utilize a compression fit seal to prevent water from leaking into the roof decking and causing issues. All of Alpine’s snow guards are rigorously performance tested at its in-house testing facility, by 3rd party testing facilities, and in the field by roofing experts. When installed properly, they will not void manufacturer warranties.
