Terne Coated Stainless Steel From Aperam Covers Clifftop California Home

Uginox Patina K44 Terne Coated Stainless Steel by Aperam is highly corrosion resistant and covered by a 20-year warranty. It can be used in challenging environments as seen on this residential project in the La Jolla community of San Diego, California that was designed by Wallace E. Cunningham Inc., a firm well known for creating unique architecture since 1979.

What made this metal roof system a challenge was not only its design but also the geographic location. The project sits on a cliff exposed to the ocean and wind-driven silica. It was noted that Uginox Patina K44 Terne Coated Stainless Steel is sustainable in this environment and is the ideal choice for its superb corrosion resistance and its beautiful natural appearance.

Daniel Schmidt, owner of CSI Architectural Metal Inc., provided design-assist and fabricated the system. Schmidt stated that another technical challenge was that the metal roof sections had to follow a radial design. All panels had to be tapered, varying from 2" to 24" in width on a length of up to 90'. Stainless steel's favorable coefficient of expansion allowed CSI Architectural Metal Inc. to fabricate the standing seam panels in full lengths. Uginox Patina K44 was also used to clad walls, fascia, garage doors, and the barbeque area.

The project architect was Wallace E. Cunningham Inc. Installation was handled by Metal Tech Construction. Panel fabrication was done by CSI Architectural Metal Inc. The general contractor was Jaynes Corp.
