Mid-West Steel Building Company Honors 2013 Structure And Building Of The Year Winners

Houston, TX - Galaxy FBO has been named Structure of the Year and the Friendship Baptist Church has been named Building of the Year in the Mid-West Steel Building Company 2013 Design Build competition.

Ed Kohutek, president of Mid-West, commented, “This year’s competition was so tough the original balloting ended in a tie among several projects. A second round of voting, with an entirely new panel, was required to finally choose our winner. I have never seen such a group of great projects in a single year.”

Galaxy FBO is a Fixed Based Operation serving general and corporate aviation needs, located at the Lone Star Executive Airport in Conroe, Texas. The facility includes a three-story building, twin hangars for aircraft storage and support buildings. E.E. Reed, Sugar Land, Texas, was the general contractor; designer was JGJ Architects, Spring, Texas; and erectors were Ramco Erectors Inc., Houston, and Empire Steel Erectors LP, Humble, Texas.

Mid-West supplied the hangars and support buildings for the project. Each of the two nearly identical state-of-the-art hangars is approximately 37,000 square feet. The hangars also have symmetrical barrel roofs. The roof panels are 24-gauge Snow White BattenLok®, and wall panels are 24-gauge Ash Gray PBR.

Each building was fitted with a hangar door system. The door systems consist of ten bottom rolling door leafs – each weighing approximately 6,800 lbs. Each door system has four electric Well Bilt Industries 200ID series in-line door operators which open and close the doors in approximately two-and-a-half minutes.

Mid-West also supplied a 16,000 square foot aircraft arrival/departure canopy which is large enough to accommodate the largest corporate jets.

There are also two other buildings for aircraft tug storage maintenance and equipment storage and parking.

Galaxy FBO’s amenities include concierge services, passenger lounges, meeting rooms, flight planning rooms with pilot weather service and a restaurant with a runway view. One of the two hangars will be utilized by FBO transit customers and local tenants. The second hangar will be leased to a flight department.

Building Of The Year – Friendship Baptist Church

The Friendship Baptist Church in Owasso, Oklahoma was named Building of the Year in the 2013 Mid-West Steel Building Company Design Build competition. The General Contractor of the church was Daniels and Daniels, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; the Erector and Roofing contractor was Mini Erection Services of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and the Designer was Daman + Lechtenberger Architects of Tulsa.

The simplicity of its lines belies the complex engineering and metal construction at the heart of the Friendship Baptist Church. The existing church building and the new 51,000 square foot building were joined by an arched wall fabricated from segmented steel with double framed walls.

The project also included cantilevered cat walks and intricate hips and valleys in the framework. Additionally, there is a circular covered walkway between the old and new buildings, one end wall of the church is ‘stair stepped’, and the roof was a combination of membrane and standing seam with B-deck underneath. The standing seam hipped roof slopes in seven different directions, which added drama – and complexity – to the project.
