When the architect for Ancillae Assumpta Academy in Wyncote, Pennsylvania began designing a new lobby for the preschool, Stepping Stones, he wanted it to be a playful and creative environment to reflect the Montessori program used in the classroom.
John J. Di Benedetto, Principal in Charge at Jenkintown, PA-based John J. Di Benedetto Associates Architects Inc., presented the design with a rendering for the new structure, which incorporated metal panels, sloped walls and pops of color. To execute his Dr. Suess-like aesthetic, Alside Supply Center of Warminster, PA provided more than 2,000 square-feet of ATAS International Castle Top aluminum wall panels.
Griffith Exteriors Inc., also of Warminster, installed the ATAS International aluminum metal panels, which were shaped like shingles and coil coated in a colorful combination of Valspar Fluropon in Rawhide and Regal Blue, adding to the geometric exterior. Valspar’s Fluropon coating is formulated to stand up to harsh weather conditions, as well as resist chalking and chemical degradation. Developed using intense pigments to achieve vivid colors, Fluropon coatings are known for maintaining vibrant colors and resisting fading. The flexible adhesive properties proved beneficial during the application process, too.
The completed building exudes confidence and creativity, two goals the preschool strives to meet with its curriculum. Based on the unique design for Stepping Stones Preschool, the Metal Construction Association awarded the design team with an honorable mention for its Exceptional Choice of Material at the 2013 MCA Chairman’s Awards.
