The Marriott Surfwatch Condominiums utilized more than 134,000 sq. ft. of Petersen PAC-CLAD aluminum material throughout a five-phase building project on Hilton Head Island, SC. The luxurious condominium resort offers elegantly appointed two and three-bedroom villas with upscale indoor and outdoor amenities.

Of the total material utilized, approximately 88,000 sq. ft. was .032 aluminum Snap-Clad? panels and 46,000 sq. ft. was .040 aluminum flat sheet flashing material. All was finished in custom color Charlotte Slate.

Design of the project was undertaken by NCG Architects Inc., Atlanta, GA. The firm specializes in resorts and golf clubs throughout the Southeast coastal area. According to Jim Carson, Project Principal and Lead Designer, “The design intent was to manipulate the building massing, architectural detailing and color palette in order to harmonize with the natural features of the sites. The exterior materials, including stucco and the standing seam roof, lend variety to the façade and are reflective of the island character. The natural color scheme further reduces the visual impact of the buildings.”

Carson went on to say that, while this was the first time the firm had specified PAC-CLAD material, they were aware of Petersen’s quality reputation. “And Petersen simply provided the best price in a tight budget situation. We were really pleased with the performance of their people and their products.”

NCG Architects uses aluminum exclusively for projects in coastal regions. Aluminum is corrosion-resistant and maintains color consistency in applications where salt spray is an issue.

The Snap-Clad roof panels were utilized on five individual condominium buildings plus a central facilities building, guardhouses, beach bar pavilion, restroom buildings and equipment structures.

Southern Roof & Wood Care Corporation, Hilton Head Island, completed installation of the PAC-CLAD material. In addition to standing seam panels, the 46,000 sq. ft. of flat sheet material was used for custom detail work. According to David Swanson, president of Southern Roof, “There were many unique items included in this job including custom finials, custom parapet wall louver vents and custom flashings installed to the tops of trellis rest stations…all of which we fabricated in-house.”

Swanson also said, “Petersen was very helpful throughout the project in terms of design, engineering, budgeting, manufacturing and delivery. We’ve since used their panels on several buildings in the area. All of the projects have turned out great.”

The general contractor was Hardin Construction Company, Atlanta.
