The magnificent new $136 million Xscape leisure and retail center in Braehead near Glasgow, Scotland, has joined an ever-growing list of landmark projects featuring Kalzip.

Designed by architects FaulknerBrowns, this striking new facility—the first of its kind in Scotland—features some 110,000 sq. ft. of Kalzip 65/305 aluminum on both the roof and walls of the main ski area. In addition, the specification for the lower level retail area was changed from a through-fix roof paneling system to Kalzip 65/500 profiled aluminum panels in order to better meet the specific performance requirements of design flexibility, durability and low maintenance.

Installed by approved Teamkal member Lakesmere for the project’s lead contractor, Laing O’Rourke, Kalzip’s thermal conductive properties, extended life and modern appearance were also vital to its selection. Owing to the unusual nature of the facility, and specifically the 655’-long real snow ski slope within, the building had to be insulated against heat gain rather than heat loss. The Kalzip panels provide a watertight seal, which when installed over the cold store construction helps maintain the optimal internal conditions for snow retention and preservation of the ski slope.

Kalzip standing seam is a durable and low-maintenance roof system that provides superior performance and outstanding design flexibility. It can be formed into numerous shapes such as curved, tapered, twisted and cork-screwed, and is available in a range of widths, lengths and gauges.
