Company President: Dale Nelson
Products & Services Offered: Roof Huggers allow roof replacement of new metal panels over an old metal roof. They can be used over screw-down or standing seam roof systems and can accommodate new standing seam or screw-down panels.
Roof Huggers are designed to save up to 70% of labor on preparation of old roof; requires only standard tools and fasteners; precision punched notches act as continuous template; available in 10' lengths; punched pilot holes allow for rapid fastening into existing support structurals; unique "nesting" into old panel profile achieves rugged, stable, low silhouette connection system.
Roof Huggers also maintain integrity of original design loadings; achieve "thermal break" air space between old and new roof sheets; allow for optional insulation; and are laboratory and load tested—with certified load charts.
Background: Roof Hugger was founded by the late D.V. “Red MC-1” McConnohie, inventor of the Roof Hugger, and Dale Nelson, president, who has decades of experience in pre-engineered structure design and construction throughout many states and overseas.
Nelson commented, “The unique Roof Hugger was conceived and patented in the early '90s when it was necessary to re-roof one of their our own buildings and we became aware of the various ‘make-do’ materials and methods being utilized in retro-fitting new metal panels over old and degraded ribbed metal roofs. We were dismayed at the inadequacy and non-code conforming method most commonly used. That method being to ‘lay’ an 18 gauge ‘hat’ channel across, and resting on, the existing 26 gauge sheet ribs.
“The system would not stand up to the most elementary engineering scrutiny for approval and/or certification. The system also raised the new roof plane to 2 1/2" to 3 inches above the structural system, an unacceptable solution.
“Our experience dictated a need for a miniature ‘Z’ section purlin that would ‘nest’ into the existing profile and fasten directly through the pan into the structural system.
“After eighteen months of trial and error sampling, Roof Hugger was born. Simple, one-piece, fast and easy to erect, the concept has been validated by its use on over 20 million square feet of retro-fit roofs to date over an area stretching from Guam and Hawaii in the Pacific, to the Caribbean Islands, Alaska and all points between.”
