For size comparison, imagine a building taller than a 20-story apartment structure and longer than a modern aircraft carrier, roughly as long as the height of the Empire State Building. A key part of this exciting project is the modern door specially designed for Hangar One's gigantic entrance. It combines strength and technology to accommodate an opening that would overwhelm any ordinary door. The restoration project employs the latest technology to reinvigorate this reminder of aviation history. The Center has four Schweiss bifold designer doors that serve as special metal gates for entering and exiting the campus. Kundig designs buildings by focusing on how people interact with their surroundings. He believes in understanding both how people move through spaces and how materials work together. ‘I’ve always felt the basis of architecture is function-driven with a poetic finish,’ said Kundig. New Schweiss Doors at Google’s Pier 57 Chelsea Campus in NYC 🚪 Pier 57 is Google's new campus in New York City, located along the Hudson River in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, about five miles west of the Empire State Building. One of Pier 57's impressive features is Horizon Hall, a black box theatre with custom retractable seating, a pop-up jumbotron, and Schweiss bifold hangar doors. The door's custom design controls light and sound, and opens to incredible views of the Hudson River. This historic pier was first built in 1907 as a shipping and storage terminal. It's located one mile north of St. John's Terminal, another historic building now part of Google's Hudson Square campus. In the early 1950s, American architect Emil Praeger redesigned Pier 57 as a public space for recreation. In 2011, Hendel Architects worked to restore and renovate the pier, turning it into a mixed-use destination.
