Silver Maple Construction Crafts a Historic Net-Zero Hangar for United Therapeutics, Featuring 120 Ft. Hydraulic Doors by Schweiss Doors United Therapeutics has unveiled a groundbreaking achievement in Concord, New Hampshire, collaborating with contractor Silver Maple Construction on the world’s first net-zero corporate airplane hangar. Electric airplanes from BETA TECHNOLOGIES, including the distinctive white ALIA CTOL model featured in the photos, will be launched from this hangar to deliver organ transplants from Manchester, NH, to locations along the East Coast. Two large Schweiss hydraulic doors, installed by Irishspan Industries, Inc., are essential to the hangar’s design. “The big hangar door, 30 ft. tall by 120 ft. wide, for the Gulf Streams, the biggest door Schweiss has ever made, actually cantilevers out,” said Evan Herron, Project Manager at Silver Maple Construction. The larger of the two doors weighs 60,000 lbs, and the smaller door weighs 20,000 lbs. Covering an expansive 36,000-square-foot area, the construction of every inch of this hangar, from the prefabricated exterior walls to the corrugated metal roof decking, has been designed and implemented to a remarkable level of detail. These features come together to set a new standard of excellence and quality in the construction industry. Another amazing innovation is that the hangar is the first code-compliant private building to feature a Safespill fire-suppression system that can channel spilled jet fuel through the floor’s trench drains and flush it away from the hangar’s aircraft in the event of a spill. Beneath the building’s foundation, a large water storage tank holds a steady water supply for the building’s fire suppression system. “I truly hope that this project sets a precedent for future hangars. Schweiss Bifold Doors Add Eye-Catching Appeal to a Dorado Beach Home Schweiss Doors, renowned for its patented bifold lift-strap door design, has recently completed another landmark project at Dorado Beach Estates, an exclusive residential community of deluxe homes in scenic Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico contractor Electromatic de PR LLC ordered and installed three bifold doors for the home. The doors measure 7½ ft. in height and have a custom wood cladding finish. Airborne Pioneers: Inside the Joyce’s Air Taxi Hub in Wasilla, AL Cash and Stacia Joyce are flying the skies with @akhelischool, their air taxi service in Wasilla, Alaska. Cash owns @vastalaska, a hunting outfitter company. Stacia teaches flight instruction in their Robinson R22 helicopter and also flies the medical helicopter for the local area. A 60’ x 80’ @miracletruss aircraft hangar anchors the core of the Joyce’s operations. Serving as a maintenance area for their aircraft and space for projects like building the attached apartments where the couple reside. On November 30, 2018, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Anchorage, Alaska area. The Joyce’s hangar only suffered a few cracks in the drywall. Roche Harbor Airport’s Latest Upgrade by Vander Griend Lumber Roche Harbor Airport is a hidden gem a mile northeast of Roche Harbor, Washington’s central business district. The private airport offers an expansive 3,593 ft. by 35 ft. runway, a welcoming gateway for aviators looking to see the beauty of San Juan County. Not far from Roche Harbor Airport, Friday Harbor Airport welcomes visitors flying in the area with its wider 3,400 ft. by 75 ft. runway. It serves an active community of 143 aircraft in over one hundred hangars. Roche Harbor Airport recently enlisted the expertise of Chance McClellan from Vander Griend Lumber Company, based in Lynden, Washington, to enhance its airport facilities. This project marked a first-of-a-kind accomplishment for McClellan, working with the efficient bifold lift-strap-style door installation. “The impression the door gives off is really cool. To have a huge door like that, whether it's open or closed creates a neat experience and environment within the hangar. There are a number of hangars out here that have homes nearby or hangar homes attached to them.
