Bonny Slope Elementary

Oregon Elementary School Learns Value Of Architectural Metal Products From CENTRIA

Bonny Slope Elementary School, located in Portland, Oregon, provides a challenging, stimulating learning environment for more than 500 students, ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade. Bonny Slope is part of the Beaverton School District, and is the only public school in Oregon to be authorized as an International Baccalaureate World School.

In 2008, the school began a renovation project that would improve the learning environment, as well as the building’s energy efficiency. Because of the steep sloping of the site, a two-story classroom wing was designed to take advantage of the natural light that permeates through the building, along with L-shaped classrooms that create a flexible learning environment.

CENTRIA’s Concept Series Concealed Fastener Profiles CS-620, Exposed Fastener Profiles Style-Rib and FormaBond Metal Composite Wall System were selected for the Bonny Slope Elementary project because of their outstanding performance features, as well as their superior benefits in terms of sustainability and aesthetics.

The Concept Series Concealed Fastener Profiles CS-620 provided a unique design solution because the panels can be installed both vertically and horizontally, along with having a common lock joint that allows the panels to be mixed freely for the custom aesthetics that the project demanded. This product was also carried from the building’s exterior to the interior, further unifying the structure and bringing the outside in.

The Exposed Fastener Profiles Style-Rib provides thermal protection and plays a key role in improving the school’s energy efficiency by minimizing heat loss and conserving energy. And the FormaBond Metal Composite Wall System completed the school’s unique, vibrant design with flat, sharp exterior lines.

In addition, the all-weather installation capability of all of the selected CENTRIA panels helps contractors to install the products more efficiently and effectively, which often results in saved time and reduced construction costs. In keeping with the renovation’s emphasis on sustainability, the Concept Series Concealed Fastener Profile CS-620 and Exposed Fastener Profile Style-Rib are Cradle to Cradle® Certified at the Silver Level, making these products an intelligent choice as well.

Finally, CENTRIA products provided the architect with virtually unlimited possibilities in form, color and texture. Concept Series Concealed Fastener Profiles CS-620, Exposed Fastener Profiles Style-Rib and FormaBond Metal Composite Wall System - in reds, grays and tans - enabled the architects to create both vibrant exterior and interior spaces that reflect the energy of the children and the spirit of the school.

The project architect was Dull Olson Weekes Architects of Portland, OR; The CENTRIA products dealer was Construction Products Northwest Co. of Beaverton, OR; the CENTRIA products installer was Portland Sheet Metal of Portland, OR; and the contractor was Skanska USA of Beaverton, OR. The 80,000 sq. ft. project was completed in September 2008.
