Foster City Elementary School

An Important Lesson About The Advantages Of Architectural Metal Products From CENTRIA

Foster City Elementary School strives to help their pupils achieve academic success while on track to becoming well rounded human beings. The philosophy of cooperative guidance from parent and teacher allows students to follow the path to becoming lifelong learners. This commitment was hampered a bit when the 26-year old elementary school was experiencing roof leaks, which led to water and mold damage. Along with the re-roofing, the 63,200 square foot renovation project – featuring products from CENTRIA - included a new building envelope and an expansion of the administration area, library and the creation of a large group instruction gym.

The development of the new buildings in Foster City, CA, allowed for an intimate courtyard space to be created surrounded by fresh facilities. The plan allowed the new buildings to blend with the existing buildings, while offering a taste of modern appeal through the use of high quality and interesting material.

CENTRIA’s Formawall Dimension Series was the ideal choice for this build because these panels make up a wall system that provides both advanced thermal and moisture protection (ATMP®) in a single panelized component. Compared to traditional multi-component wall construction - which can require up to seven separate components - Formawall Dimension Series is manufactured as one component. In addition to being designed to increase performance, this unique feature significantly reduces jobsite waste and environmental impact.

The aesthetic properties of Formawall were also ideal for this project. A major benefit is that these panels worked well within the renovation of existing structures while complementing the new buildings on the small campus. Because of the trimless ends of each panel, the look of the wall is continuous without any breaks because of visible fasteners. Also the panels can be mounted horizontally and vertically to achieve long sleek sight lines side to side or from floor to sky.

Since moisture was the major problem which led to the renovation, the architect’s specified CENTRIA’s MetalWrap Series insulated composite backup panels. MetalWrap’s single panel design provides protection against air and moisture breaches. These breaches can lead to damaging condensation, a reduction in thermal performance and a compromised building envelope. MetalWrap Series was also selected because it reduces installation time, offering a significant advantage to building owners, general contractors and installation teams.

The architect was WLC Architects, Inc. of Berkeley, CA; the CENTRIA products dealer/installer was BT Mancini Company of Milpitas, CA; and the contractor was Roebbelen Contracting Inc. of El Dorado Hills, CA.
