Target Field may not have a fancy retractable roof, but it is a fan-friendly facility boasting a great seating plan and one of the largest fixed roof canopies in all of baseball. Charged with wrapping the canopy in metal was M.G. McGrath. Headquartered just a stone’s throw from the stadium in Maplewood, MN, McGrath is one of the nation’s leading fabricators and installers of metal panel systems.

Target Field is located in the historic Warehouse district of downtown Minneapolis. It was designed by Populous (formerly HOK Sport). Mortenson Construction was the construction manager. The 39,504-seat ballpark was constructed at a cost of $440 million and is expected to see its first professional game on April 2, 2010, when the Minnesota twins entertain the St. Louis Cardinals in the first of two exhibition contests. The host Twins will take to the field for real on April 12 when the Boston Red Sox come to town. The stadium has also been selected the host site of the 2014 Major League All-Star game.

McGrath’s work on the new stadium was extensive with the firm being responsible for the installation of nearly 150,000 sq. ft. of corrugated metal sub-roofing, 40,000 sq. ft. wall panels, soffit and flashing, 80,000 sq. ft. of sunshade soffit and 2,000 sq. ft. of metal roofing.

The corrugated sub-roofing was VR Classic Omega by Firestone Metal Products of Anoka, MN. The panels were installed over 16-gauge hat channels and 16-gauge studs. McGrath also installed the associated gutters and flashing beneath the stadium seating.

The 80,000 sq. ft. of panels installed on the sunshade were Versa-Dek LS ES, manufactured by the Metal Dek Group of Columbia, SC. They were installed over custom designed 14-gauge radius box beams at the sunshade soffits.

The 40,000 sq. ft. of metal walls were IW-10A and IW-30A profile panels, both manufactured by Moon Township, PA-based CENTRIA. Panels were installed in both horizontal and vertical orientation.

The 2,000 sq. of standing seam panels were Zip Rib, manufactured by Merchant & Evans of Burlington, NJ.
