When most people think of storage facilities, they think rows of garage doors located in industrial areas. However, times have changed, as people and businesses move. Self-storage has shifted from industrial and rural locations to more central, residential neighborhoods. Curb appeal has never been more important, as new infrastructure is needed to support the ebb and flow of people in and out of cities.

Dymon Storage’s recent facility, located in Brampton, Ontario, is a prime example of how self-storage is evolving to keep up with the times. Breaking away from previous storage designs, Dymon Storage wanted a building that would disrupt the industry’s norms while bringing a sense of luxury to their brand.

To achieve this “2.0 design,” architects chose varying Kingspan insulated metal panels over other options like external insulation and finishing systems. Kingspan offered quicker and more affordable all-in-one wall assembly solutions with elevated aesthetic options. The architect of record for the project, Nicholas Caragianis Architect Inc., and design architect, TACT Architecture, selected Kingspan KS Series products in Pewter, Dark Bronze and Weathered Zinc, giving the building a more modern and clean-cut look.

Kingspan’s new Accent Fin™ blade was also used to add aesthetic dynamics to the panels, elevating the building’s high-end design even further. The Accent Fin™ integrates into KS Series and Optimo® panels, available in six designs: blade, mini-blade, triangle, A-frame, rectangle and flat box. The blade shaped fin allowed architects to highlight the panel lines in an eye-catching way.

In addition to aesthetics that aligned with the Dymon Storage brand, Kingspan’s insulated metal panels are weather-tight, providing a strong thermal and moisture barrier, protecting the stored items inside. Architects used the KarrierPanel universal barrier system and MF Fire Rated Panels, along with KS Mini Micro-Rib panels, which all provide a weather-sealed joint, preventing energy losses associated with thermal bridging. The strong thermal protection is an energy efficient option for the climate-controlled environment. When equipped with Kingspan’s industry leading QuadCore® insulation core technology, KS Series panels deliver R-values of up to 8 per inch.

In total, the 200,000 square foot Dymon Storage “2.0 design” featured 35,000 square feet of Kingspan insulated metal panels and was completed in just 14 months, critical to meet the increased demand for self-storage, as well as the limited construction season.

Dymon Storage is not the only company in the storage industry to recognize insulated metal panels as the superior building material for a climate-controlled environment. Due to the wide range of design options, ease of construction and superior R-value, Kingspan insulated metal panels have been selected for multiple self-storage centers throughout the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
