The Natalie L. Haslam Music Center is the newly constructed home of the University of Tennessee School of Music in Knoxville. The four-floor, 123,000-square-foot facility houses eight technology-enhanced classrooms; 56 practice rooms; 57 performance studios/academic offices; an organ studio; a 412-seat recital hall; a music library; a recording/mixing lab; electronic music, computer and piano labs; and an academic tutoring center. CENTRIA products were featured in the facility’s design.

The music center was designed to minimize energy consumption throughout the facility. As part of the aesthetic design of the building exterior, colored portions of the music center’s glass are coated with a ceramic pattern that reduces solar heat gain. The building also conserves water by collecting and storing rain water in underground cisterns used to irrigate the site’s plants and lawns.

Tennessee’s chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center with the second-highest design honor in the state. The music center was given the merit award for new construction by AIA Tennessee for its highly technical design, built with limited funding, as well as its handsome interiors, detailed spaces and effective use of natural light. The music center was designed to LEED® Silver certification standards, pending approval from the U.S. Green Building Council.

CENTRIA’s Formawall Dimension Series panels were selected for the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center for their superior performance, sustainability and aesthetics.

Formawall Dimension Series insulated metal wall systems provide thermal efficiency and moisture control in a single panelized component. Dimension Series insulated metal panels include a factory foamed-in-place core, minimizing insulation gaps, along with a thermal break between the face and the liner. The panels offer superior weather resistance by utilizing pressure equalization along the length of the horizontal joinery.

Available in horizontal and vertical panels, the Formawall Dimension Series provided the designers of the Haslam Center with a wide array of aesthetic options and contributed to the facility’s sleek, contemporary look. Dimension Series offers a wide range of lengths, thicknesses, reveals and profiles, along with integrated wall components like windows, louvers and sunshades, for an integrated, high-performance system. The panels also can be curved, and panel-mitering makes clean, sharp corners possible.

The interlocking assembly and all-in-one fabrication features of the Formawall Dimension Series deliver single-source accountability on façade construction and minimize freight and materials requirements. The panels’ single-component construction results in less jobsite waste, which makes them a more environmentally friendly option, and their lightweight nature makes them easy to handle and install and may require less framing. Dimension Series panels also offer concealed clips and fasteners to provide a clean, uninterrupted appearance. These features minimize exterior streaking and staining and contribute to reduced building-maintenance costs.
