As a groundbreaking new structure in Costa Mesa, CA, Pacific Medical Center’s unique metal and glass facade sets the building apart from others in the area. Metal wall systems from Kingspan Insulated Panels and Kingspan Morin helped contribute to the new building’s desired aesthetic and were selected for their energy-saving qualities.

The Pacific Medical Center provides clinical support services for its patients. It is a private developer conveniently located next to the Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, which stands atop the list of the finest medical facilities in Southern California.

“At the time of its construction, the city of Costa Mesa did not have a first-class medical office building of this quality and proximity to Hoag Hospital,” explained Michael Fuller, architect, HOK Architects. “The use of metal panels and glass to reflect the high-tech function of the building distinguishes it from its neighbors. Since its construction, the center has served as a catalyst for other commercial and high tech development in the area.”

Over 60,000 sq. ft. of Kingspan's Centurywall™ (CWP-H) insulated wall panels were applied to the building, providing design flexibility and a contemporary, fresh look. Centurywall horizontal panels are used to create a modern, high-tech appearance where a flat, horizontal architectural metal wall system is desired.

“In addition to its aesthetic value, we specified Centurywall for its economy and energy performance characteristics,” continues Fuller.

CWP-H panels provide hidden fastener offset joinery for easy attachment to structural components from the building exterior, which represents a cost savings by speeding up construction. CWP-H panels are easily integrated with sheetrock wall construction for multi-story applications like the Pacific Medical Center.

“A significant feature CWP-H provides is the superior insulation it guarantees,” explained a Kingspan representative. “Its high R-value results in improved insulation and building energy efficiency – especially important in a medical setting where optimum comfort for patients, family members and employees is a requirement.”

Morin's X12 horizontal concealed fastener wall panels were also used on the medical center. X12 panels are furnished as insulated or non-insulated systems that can be applied vertically or horizontally. When a building change or expansion is required, X12 panels become helpful. The components dismantle and reconstruct smoothly and quickly, matching previous construction.

The concealed fastener wall panels can be fabricated from galvanized steel, galvalume, aluminum, or stainless steel. The stretch ribs on these profiles may be eliminated. Coatings come in 16 colors to enhance appearance and provide extended weather ability.

The profiles are supplied in widths from 12" to 24", and standard lengths up to 48'. Extended lengths may also be accommodated.

Construction on the Pacific Medical Center started in spring of 2005 and finished approximately 14 months later. The project team consisted of HOK, a global architectural firm that specializes in planning, design and delivery solutions for buildings and communities; and general contractor Millie & Severson, located in Los Angeles, CA. Alumawall, San Jose, CA, served as installer.
