Hagadone Residence

M.G. McGrath

Duane Hagadone wasn’t born into money but over the course of his 74 years he’s amassed a fortune. A newspaper publisher by trade, he has extensive holdings in his Idaho hometown, Coeur d’Alene, which includes restaurants, condominiums and a golf resort. His 205’ yacht, Lady Lola, features what he calls the world’s only floating 18-hole golf course. The craft has been known to travel with a supply vessel toting Hagadone’s helicopter and landing pad, several speed boats, sailboats, kayaks and a three-man submarine.

With enough money to choose any location and build the home of his dreams, Hagadone recently did just that. Acquiring a prime piece of real estate in the Santa Rosa Mountains, overlooking the 18th hole of the Bighorn golf course in Palm Desert, CA, the self-made millionaire paid for the design and construction of a sprawling $30 million home with some 32,000 sq. ft. of indoor living space. When outdoor gardens, patios, sports courts and pools are factored in, the size of Hagadone’s home is more than doubled.

Wanting the very best that money could buy, Hagadone chose to have his home’s 57 different curved and angled roof segments topped with 40,000 sq. ft. of 20 oz. Tecu Oxide copper, and its more than one lineal mile of fascia covered with gold crystal-finish titanium. He used the same material to create custom floor tiles around the base of his built-in shark tank and aquarium.

Both the roofing and fascia were custom formed and installed by M.G. McGrath Architectural Sheet Metal of Maplewood, MN. The company is renowned for its abilities as a fabricator and installer of custom architectural metal products, predominantly metal roof and wall systems. The project's general contractor was Panco Construction of Spokane Valley, WA.

Habitat Architecture of California designed the one-of-a-kind home.
