Whether it’s an “art barn” as he likes to call it or a “mini-museum” as others refer to it, the new 4,500 sq. ft. art and entertainment structure on the residential estate of billionaire Steve Tisch in Beverly Hills is a stunner. Tisch is a noted Hollywood producer and also chairman and EVP of the New York Giants football team.

Tisch hired the Los Angeles-based architectural firm of Johnston Marklee & Associates to design the building that consists of two volumes comprised of the same house-like shapes.  “Very simply, I wanted a home for my art and I also wanted to use the space for entertaining and hanging out with friends,” Tisch said.

The entire exterior of the structure is clad with RHEINZINK. Approximately 6,500 sq. ft. of RHEINZINK prePATINA blue-grey Vertical Angle Standing Seam Panels clad the façade and 7,000 sq. ft. of prePATINA blue-grey Double Lock Standing Seam Panels cover the roof.  All RHEINZINK panels were fabricated and installed by MJC Roofing, Inc., Glendale, CA.

According to Lindsay Erickson, project manager at Johnston Marklee, “This was an exciting project to do. We initially considered using brick because Tisch’s existing home has historical architectural significance and is clad in brick. But as the project developed, we re-evaluated and decided that the material needed to be as clean and modern as possible. And we felt that using a material that could clad both façade as well as the roof was desirable. That’s where the RHEINZINK came in.  It really defined the way we thought about the design. The building became a solid object.”

The interior of the finished building has 18” floor boards of Douglas fir treated with a lye finish. The planks are the same width as the standing seam roof panels and run in the same direction.  “Everything works within that 18” module,” according to Erickson. “The building has sort of an ‘over-scaled’ spatial quality about it. But it’s a large space inside and the scale ‘feels right’ when you’re in there.” Much of Tisch’s art displayed in the space is very large-format.

Erickson also commented on the patina attributes of zinc.  “We like the prePATINA aspect of RHEINZINK,” Erickson said. “The weathering will give it even nicer qualities as it ages.”

The RHEINZINK distributor on the project was Sheet Metal Supply (SMS), Mundelein, IL.
