Toronto, Ontario, Canada - People get into business because they know they can provide a product or service better than the competition. They also get into business because they know they can make money providing that product or service.

When it comes to making money, efficiency is the key in any business. Samco Machinery produces roll forming equipment for a number of industries, including building and construction, transportation, storage, consumer products and energy. Gerry Birmingham, Vice President of Engineering at Samco, said the company has been leveraging its roll forming experience to create markets for new products that assist customers in improving efficiencies.

“Samco Machinery has committed to working very close with our customers to develop solutions to their challenges,” Birmingham said. “Most of our customers are either dealing with a need to increase capacity, launch a new product or to cost-justify an upgrade. And when they do, they are looking to collaborate on operator-friendly equipment with improved efficiencies.”

Samco’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Toronto and New Delhi, India, were designed to optimize equipment construction but also simulate quite closely the workspace layout of many of its customers. The main hub of Samco design and manufacturing is the 160,000-square-foot Canadian facility.

Most roll forming equipment requires material handling…on the front or back end of the line. Most customers have some unique need that requires a unique solution. The Samco engineering department, working closely with the customer, generally provides a fully integrated custom designed line.

“We have two kinds of customers,” Birmingham said. “One customer is familiar with roll forming and already has a pretty good idea of what they want and what Samco can do for them. The other comes to us with a need and inquires about our capabilities. Most of the time we can help both.”

Samco offers a variety of material handling equipment for multiple industries.

Uncoilers: Samco initially manufactured uncoilers for the tube mill and roll forming industry more than 35 years ago. Today, the company offers innovation and design of complete roll forming lines and uncoilers for the automotive, shelving and racking, building construction and stud and track industries. Uncoilers are designed to withstand tube mill speeds of up to 1,000 feet per minute. Uncoilers and coil car combinations are engineered to suit a unique application for each customer. (Samco's Key Efficiency Tip: Your line becomes more productive when you employ proper coil handling procedures, therefore creating less downtime.)

Slitters: Samco slitting lines are designed to handle a wide array of materials. Either driven or pull-through, the interchangeable machines permit off-line setups and include strip tensioners and oscillating rewinders. (Samco's Key Efficiency Tip: Incorporating coil slitting as part of your production capability line reduces waste and can be more economical.) For more on slitters, visit

Stackers: Roof or wall panel stackers do just that: stack panels at the end of the roll forming line. They are programmed to move the stack of panels at a pre-determined number of panels and then move the stack to an area for pickup by a forklift. (Samco's Key Efficiency Tip: Stackers allow for maximum run speeds and eliminate the need to have operators manually gather and stack panels as they come off the line.) For more on stackers, visit

Nesters: Nesters for the stud and track industry handle product as it comes off the line up to 500 feet per minute. As the name suggests, they nest studs for safe and efficient moving or packing and shipment. (Samco's Key Efficiency Tip: Similar to stackers, the nesters eliminate the need for multiple workers at the end of the roll forming line, providing a safer and more efficient work environment.) Bundlers: Master bundler machines bundle the nestled studs when they come off the roll former and come with automated strapping. This equipment automates the handling of mini-bundles and automatically builds pre-programmed master bundles. (Samco's Key Efficiency Tip: Bundlers effectively reduce the labor of two operators from each roll forming line at production speeds that can exceed 500 feet per minute.)
