Washington, DC - Jon-Paul Cardin, P.E., has joined the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) as Engineer, Construction Codes and Standards. He will focus primarily on codes and standards, with initial responsibility for the development of code change proposals for International Code Council Group B; committee work with the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) and ASTM International; assistance in the review of AISI standards prior to publication; and project management for various AISI-sponsored research projects.

Cardin comes to AISI from SCAFCO Steel Stud Company in Spokane, Washington.

“Jon-Paul has a diverse background that fits in very well with the strategic direction and long-term goals of our Construction Technical Program,” said Jay Larson, P.E., F.ASCE, Managing Director, AISI Construction Technical Program. “At SCAFCO Steel Stud Company, he worked on product development and certification, as well as the development of technical material and the delivery of technical information to architects and engineers. At AISI, the codes and standards function is at the core of our Construction Technical Program. Such efforts are grounded in research and the development of advanced cold-formed steel technologies and design practices, and leveraged by technology transfer activities that take this information directly to architects, designers, building contractors, and other construction professionals. Jon-Paul will play a key role in helping us to meet these objectives.”

Larson commented that Cardin is already familiar with AISI as an active participant on its Committee on Specifications and Committee on Framing Standards. Previously, he represented the Supreme Steel Framing System Association (SSFSA) at AISI’s biannual meetings of the Steel Industry Code Forum. Cardin is also an active member of the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) and recently authored CFSEI Technical Note W106-15, Design for Splicing of Cold-Formed Steel Wall Studs.

Before joining AISI, Cardin was Engineering Manager at SCAFCO Steel Stud Company. Previously, he was a staff engineer with Strata, Inc. in Spokane, where he drafted geotechnical proposals and design reports and provided third-party inspection. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers-Structural Engineers Institute, Structural Engineers Association of Washington, and ASTM International. He earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and a B.S. degree in Mathematics from the University of Idaho. He will maintain an office in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

AISI’s codes and standards work is conducted under the Construction Market Council of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of AISI, which oversees the industry’s investment in advancing the competitive use of steel by meeting the demands of the marketplace.
