SMDI Adds Geary As Manager, Construction Sustainability

Washington, DC - Eamon Geary, LEED AP - ID+C, has joined the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), as Manager of Construction Sustainability. He is responsible for assessing environmental opportunities for steel in the marketplace, representing the steel industry in sustainability codes and standards development arenas, and providing information and support to SMDI’s construction, automotive and container programs and to other AISI teams on matters affecting construction sustainability.

“Eamon brings valuable experience in sustainable design and construction projects from his previous employment opportunities and is a LEED-accredited professional,” said Mark Thimons, P.E., LEED AP – BD+C, Vice President, Sustainability, Steel Market Development Institute. “His real-world experience adds another dimension to our current scientific focus on life-cycle assessment and strengthens our industry’s ability to develop and implement sustainable construction products and practices.”

Before joining SMDI, Geary was Sustainability Director at Michael Baker International in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he was responsible for overseeing the sustainable design and construction of the company’s projects. He also ensured that sustainable design features were incorporated to meet the appropriate levels of LEED certification and the owners’ energy requirements. His projects included the U.S. Army and Armed Forces Reserve Centers with administrative offices, training centers, vehicle maintenance facilities, and storage buildings. Previous employment positions included Program Officer with the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) USA and Project Specialist with the Green Building Alliance. Geary earned a B.A. degree in Environmental Studies from Allegheny College. He is located at SMDI’s Pittsburgh office.

The Steel Market Development Institute grows and maintains the use of steel through strategies that promote cost-effective solutions in the automotive, construction and container markets, as well as for new-growth opportunities in non-traditional steel markets. SMDI’s Construction Sustainability program is conducted under the Construction Market Council. For more information, visit
