Direct Metals Provides Custom Carbon Steel For Campus Sculpture

UTEP-1

Kennesaw, GA – Direct Metals, an international steel service center with locations in both Kennesaw, Georgia and Waukegan, Illinois, provided specialty metal products for the much-anticipated Buried Pick monument, recently erected on the campus of the University of Texas El Paso in El Paso.

Direct Metals provided 17 pieces of custom carbon steel perforated metal plates for the 40’-tall x 25’-long x 12’-wide structure. The plates were produced with 1/2" diameter holes on 11/16" staggered centers. The pickax sculpture is set on a steel and concrete base. Letters on the monument, U-T-E-P, are 3-1/2 feet tall and set in both sides of the ax handle.

The giant art piece is adjacent to the University’s S-3 parking lot and is visible to students and visitors as they enter campus. The statue not only stands out during the day, as the perforated letters can be seen illuminated in blue at night.
