Portland, OR — A good spring cleaning for the exterior of your home is a great way to uplevel the curb appeal and prepare for the coming summer season. And for homes with metal roofs, make it a top-to-bottom job to keep the roof looking its best and lasting its longest. That's the message from the Metal Roofing Alliance.

And many projects that make the biggest impact are easy enough for homeowners to tackle themselves. That’s especially true for homes with metal roofs. Unlike asphalt roofs which can be prone to moss, mildew and fungus and require harsh chemicals to treat and clean, cleaning a quality metal roof is often as simple and inexpensive as using little more than plain water to effectively wash away dirt and debris.

“Metal roofs are well-known for being trouble-free and easy to maintain.  A simple cleaning can keep your roof in tiptop condition, looking great and performing well for many decades to come,” said Renee Ramey, executive director of the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA).

Whether homeowners tackle cleaning themselves or hire a professional, MRA recommends five simple steps and this non-toxic recipe for metal roof top cleaning:

Step #1:  Clean out all gutters and downspouts and remove any large rooftop debris such as branches.

Step #2:  Try a garden hose attachment to spray away common dirt and and debris (never use a power washer)

Step #3: If water alone isn’t enough to remove common dirt and debris, mix 1/4 cup detergent (including mild laundry detergents, car washing soap, mild dish soap) per gallon of water. Do not overuse or abuse cleaning agents. Always follow the manufacturer’s specific instructions to help protect and maintain roof warranties.

Step #4: Apply the solution to the roof surface using washcloth, sponge, a soft bristle brush and/or non-abrasive pad. The goal is to use the lightest touch that will effectively do the job. Never use steel wool, wire brushes, scouring powders, paint removers or thinners on a metal roof.

Step #5: Let the solution stand for 5 to 10 minutes, before thoroughly rinsing the surface with plain water.

Remember that safety is always the most important step for any type of roof maintenance, no matter what the material. Do not get on ladders or on rooftops if you are not comfortable, equipped or well-prepared to take the necessary and proper precautions.
