MBCEA Announces 2023 Building Of The Year Winners

Bethlehem, PA - The Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA) announced its 2023 Building of the Year winners at the 54th Annual MBCEA Conference, held May 8 – 10 in Nashville, Tennessee. The overall winner was the Terminal F roof retrofit project at the Port of Miami undertaken by Lemartec Corporation, a MasTec company, of Coconut Grove, Florida.

Additionally, Awards of Merit and Excellence were announced for buildings in four separate categories: Education, Recreation and Religious; Manufacturing and Warehouse; Reroof, Renovation, Addition; and Specialty.

“Congratulations to Lemartec and their remarkable work on the Terminal F retrofit,” said Jennifer Heimburger, MBCEA President. “This year saw a record number of entrants, and I am continually impressed by the work our members do. All the winners should be applauded for their achievements.”

Following is a complete list of all 2023 MBCEA Building of the Year Award Winners, the MBCEA members that worked on the building and the metal building manufacturer/supplier.

Building of the Year: Port of Miami Terminal F Roof Retrofit in Miami, FL. Lemartec Corporation of Coconut Grove, FL served as the GC/prime construction manager for the 30,000-square-foot project that features multiple ridgelines and a deep blue metal roof. Varco Pruden Buildings of Memphis, TN was the metal building and roof manufacturer.

Education, Recreation and Religious – Award of Excellence: Springfield Sports Complex, Springfield, MO. Crossland Construction Company of Columbus, KS was the GC/construction manager and steel erector on the 94,000-square-foot indoor sports facility. Red Dot Buildings of Athens, TX manufactured the metal building.

Education, Recreation and Religious – Award of Merit: The Picklebarn, Mankato, MN. APX Construction Group of Mankato, MN was the GC for the 32,000-square-foot pickleball complex. The metal building was manufactured by Metallic Buildings of Houston, TX.

Manufacturing and Warehouse – Award of Excellence: The Home Depot warehouse and store, Houston, TX. Span Construction & Engineering, Inc. of Madera, CA was the metal building supplier and erector for this 116,850-square-foot prototype Home Depot center. Butler Manufacturing of Kansas City, MO manufactured the metal building and roof.

Manufacturing and Warehouse – Award of Merit: Costco Wholesale warehouse, St. Augustine, FL. Span Construction & Engineering, Inc. of Madera, CA was the metal building supplier and erector for this 157,522-square-foot facility. Butler Manufacturing of Kansas City, MO manufactured the metal building and roof.

Reroof, Renovation and Addition – Award of Excellence: Puritan Medical Products Exterior Improvements, Portland, TN. Design Systems Builders, LLC, located in Nashville, TN, was the metal building and roof erector for the project, which included 195,900-square-feet of reroofing and 76,800-square-feet of metal wall panels. Butler Manufacturing of Kansas City, MO supplied the metal roof, while Butler Manufacturing and Kingspan Insulated Panels of Deland, FL provided the metal wall panels.

Reroof, Renovation and Addition – Award of Merit: Alliance HSP renovation and reroof in Pennsauken, NJ. Thomas Phoenix International of Easthampton, NJ was the metal building erector for the 177,300 square-foot renovation, reconstruction and addition that involved five buildings. Metal Sales Corporation and American Buildings provided the metal buildings, metal roof and metal wall panels.

Specialty – Award of Excellence: Cote Gold Mine Mill Building, Gogama, ON, Canada. Scott Steel Erectors, located in Hamilton, ON, Canada, served as the metal building erector for the 140,000-square-foot building with a 125-foot-high eave housing two overhead cranes. Steelway Building Systems, located in Aylmer, ON, Canada, was the metal building manufacturer.

Specialty – Award of Merit: King County Loop Vehicle Maintenance Facility, North Bend, WA. Bahnmiller Construction of Everett, WA served as the metal building supplier and builder on the 12,000-square-foot building that has been LEED Platinum certified. Nucor Building Systems, located in Waterloo, IN, was the metal building manufacturer.

Entries were judged by an outside panel of judges based on the following criteria: Aesthetics, Unusual or Interesting Features, Quality, Complexity, and Green Building Elements. Judges for this year’s awards were Ronald Albert, AIA, RHA Architects; Jerry Gorski, Gorski Engineering; and Matthew B. Jarmel, AIA, MBA, Jarmel Kizel Architects and Engineers, Inc. To be eligible, the project must have been completed in 2022 by an MBCEA Contractor Member.
