Owned by the Columbus Consolidated Government of Columbus, GA, the recently completed Columbus Ice Rink is home ice for the Columbus Cottonmouths, a minor league hockey team playing in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The 37,500 sq. ft. sports complex includes an NHL-style regulation ice rink, locker rooms, a pro shop, a concessions area, equipment rooms, offices and spectator seating area. It seats 3,000 and has a state-of-the-art sound system.
Through form and materials, the building melds the contemporary with the traditional. The dominant products showcased on the exterior are brick, aluminum composite material (ACM) and glass. The ACM was ALPOLIC from Mitsubishi Plastics Composites America Inc. of Chesapeake, VA.
Altech Panel Systems of Cartersville, GA, fabricated panels for the building from two colors of 4mm-thick, FR-cored ALPOLIC ACM. Close to 30,000 sq. ft. of panels were installed on the building by Bristol Engineered Metals LLC. The total was comprised of nearly equal amounts of Mica Champagne (14,640 sq. ft.) and Oyster-colored (15,100 sq. ft.) panels.
The project’s completion date was April 1, 2011. The building’s architect was 2WR of Columbus. Van Winkle & Co., Atlanta, GA, was the general contractor.
