More than 40,000 sq. ft. of Citadel’s Envelope 2000® metal composite material was used to highlight the contemporary architecture of the new Burkholder Middle School in Henderson, NV. The panels were installed using the Reveal (RV) System, a field assembled attachment method utilizing perimeter moldings, and finished in Arabian Blue to preserve the historical reference of the community facility.

The 114,000 sq. ft. “adaptive retrofit” project retained portions of an existing 20,000 gymnasium but converted it into classrooms and a cafeteria.

Design for the project was done by SHARCHITECTURE, Las Vegas. “With the history of the school in the area and the fact that the new gym extends 55’ in the air, the building is definitely a prominent landmark,” according to Mark McGinty, principal at SHARCHITECTURE. The bold Arabian Blue 35’ canopies clearly identify individual entrances for each of the various middle school grades.

The Envelope 2000 system provided a major design element. “I’ve got a ton of it on the project,” McGinty said, “but it’s easy to detail and installs quickly which really helped keep us on schedule. The biggest challenge was how to integrate the smooth, clean, highly polished Citadel panels with the heavily textured split face block façade.”

According to McGinty, the overall design relied heavily on large shed roofs. “The gym is every bit of 8,000 sq. ft. and has a single shed roof off the back. We used a Citadel-provided drip edge and integral gutters hidden behind the Envelope 2000 system. The roof is installed right up to the top of the panels. We’re very confident with the system’s water repellant capabilities.”

Installation of the Citadel panels was done by Noorda Sheet Metal, Las Vegas. The Citadel sales representative on the project was Elite Architectural Products, Scottsdale/Las Vegas.
