Colleges are increasingly motivated to support student health and wellness initiatives on campus. As J. Thomas Seymour, AIA, executive vice president with the architectural/ engineering firm of PSA-Dewberry said, "Many colleges and universities in [Illinois] are recognizing that fitness centers are essential as a focal point for their campuses and a popular place for student activities and socializing."

In May 2006, the Illinois State University Board of Trustees approved construction of a state-of-the-art Student Fitness and Recreation Building, a $50 million project in Normal, IL that now houses Campus Recreation, Health Promotion and Wellness and the School of Kinesiology and Recreation. In the 170,000 sq. ft. facility, students can enjoy basketball courts, cardio/strength training areas, an indoor track, group fitness spaces, a pool and a climbing wall along with classrooms and laboratories.

An extensive recreation area created many new opportunities for the university. The popular facility has won awards from American School and University magazine, Athletic Business magazine, and Recreation Management magazine.

Illinois State University’s Student Fitness and Recreation Building was created for generations of students to enjoy. Therefore it had to be durable as well as aesthetically pleasing. CENTRIA's Versawall insulated metal panels allowed the architects to preserve the collegiate Georgian character of the campus while blending it seamlessly with a dynamic, contemporary look.

Versawall insulated metal panels were selected for their flexibility and aesthetics. The panels’ long length is ideal for schools and any mid-rise buildings. Concealed fasteners also make these panels visually appealing, eliminating any breaks or interruptions in the exterior. Installation is fast and easy, enabling projects to stay on schedule. The combination of the double tongue-and-groove joinery and factory-applied vapor sealing provided superior resistance to the elements as well as thermal protection.

The architect was PSA-Dewberry of Chicago, IL. The contractor was River City Construction of East Peoria, IL. The CENTRIA products dealer was G&L Associates of Des Plains, IL. The CENTRIA products installer was East Iowa Deck of Lockport, IL.

CENTRIA products used on this project included:

• Versawall® Vertical - Square Feet: 39,791; Color: Silversmith; Finish: Embossed/ Striated; Coating: Sundance Mica; Gauge: 22/26.
