Lindsay, Texas, located just a short distance from Dallas, fell victim to major hail storms in 2011 and 2012. These North Texas hail storms are somewhat common and have been known to cause millions of square feet of all types of roofs to be replaced. Even though the town’s high school had an existing metal roof, the up to golf ball size hail caused severe cosmetic damage to the point the school’s insurer agreed to a recover.

The roofing contractor, D. K Haney Construction, Inc. (DKH) of Ft. Worth, TX, a 22-year veteran to roofing in North Texas, was qualified and able to mobilize quickly and to get the job completed. DKH President Dustin Haney’s first step was to call upon some experts in metal-over-metal retrofit re-roofing. Dale Nelson, President of Roof Hugger, Inc. of Odessa, FL and Jim Townsend with Exceptional Metals of Saginaw, MI were contacted by Haney to help put a system’s package together.

The new metal roof installed over the 19,086 sq. ft. gymnasium and the 7,814 sq. ft. vocational building was Exceptional Metals' 24-gauge EM200S standing seam system in Colonial Red that was jobsite roll-formed up to 60'-0" lengths. The retrofit sub-framing system was supplied by Roof Hugger, which allowed the existing roofs to remain in-place, providing a safe work environment for the DKH installers and protection from the weather, including rain, during installation. A total of 6,540 linear feet of special 4.5" tall Hugger sub-purlins were used to accommodate an energy efficiency upgrade using 6” thick full fiberglass insulation between the old and new roofs. The Huggers were fitted for two different existing roof profiles, which was a 12" o.c. "R" Panel on the vocational building and a 24" wide Trapezoidal SSR on the gymnasium.

The project was completed in August 2012 without incident and interruption to the school's activities.

About Roof Hugger

roof hugger logoRoof Hugger notched sub-purlins enable replacement of new metal roof panels over an old metal roof. They can be used over screw-down or standing seam roof systems and can accommodate new standing seam or screw-down panels. Roof Huggers also maintain integrity of original design loadings; achieve "thermal break" air space between old and new roof sheets; allow for optional insulation; and are laboratory and load tested—with certified load charts.
