A fine example of sloped metal roofing’s ability to rectify problems inherent with flat-roofing can be found on the campus of York Technical College in Rock Hill, SC. There, a 3:12-pitched metal roof system by McElroy Metal Inc. was installed over the top of a problem-plagued built-up fiberglass roof, eliminating forever the ability of water to pond on the old flat roof deck.

Michael Keeshen and Associates of Greenville, SC was the 2007 project’s architect. I and E Specialties of Lexington, SC was the contractor. The metal roof—a McElroy Maxima 216 standing seam system—features 24-gauge panels with a Dark Bronze Kynar 500-based paint finish. The panels were attached to retrofit framing erected atop the old roof surface. Six inches of figerblass insulation was blown into the void between the old and new roofs. In all, some 32,000 sq. ft. of new metal roofing was required for the job.
