The $127-million Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in Dallas, Texas is an outpatient cancer treatment facility that receives more than 90,000 visits annually. The center, connected to the pre-existing inpatient areas of the Baylor University Medical Center campus by a sky bridge, provides a rest area for visitors and connects to the medical center’s parking garages. A sustainable project featuring architectural metal products from CENTRIA, this structure has received LEED Gold certification.

Baylor Healthcare was looking to create a building that conveyed its message of peace and tranquility with natural lighting. The utilization of CENTRIA metal provides a clean, unbroken aesthetic that eliminates visual breaks in the sight lines and lends the facility a clean and polished appearance.

The 10-story building features a curtain wall façade of glass-fiber reinforced concrete, stone, glass and metal panels. The construction of the cancer center has allowed for the consolidation of previously fragmented care services to one location, increasing efficiency and convenience. It has incorporated state-of-the-art technology and sustainability to provide the best in comprehensive cancer care and has been ranked as one of the top 50 “America’s Best Hospitals” by US News and World Report. Innovative modernizations - including a demonstration kitchen, cancer boutique and 14,000 sq. ft. conference center complete with a 200-seat auditorium - were implemented to promote patient and caregiver education, while the newly added healing garden fosters a sense of peace and well-being.

CENTRIA’s FormaBond is the industry’s only one-step metal composite panel fabricated system. FormaBond is manufactured entirely by CENTRIA using a proprietary reaction injection molding process. The result is a stronger, flatter finish with high performance air and water ratings. The dry joinery eliminates wet seals and provides optimum venting to allow wall cavities to dry effectively while prohibiting the entry of rainwater. These revolutionary, thin aluminum composite panels, painted in CENTRIA’s Bright Silver color, provide the facility with smooth, crisp sight lines and give it a refined, modernized exterior reflective of its medical advancements.

The IW Series Concealed Fastener Profiles are a cost effective way to allow for diverse and intriguing visual effects. The common lock joint design of the panels allows for interchangeability and can be insulated for advanced thermal protection. In addition, the IW Series allows for all-weather installation, expediting installation time. Profile Series Louvers blend seamlessly with the IW Series Concealed Fasteners and eliminate visual breaks in sight lines, allowing for a clean and harmonious aesthetic.

The project architect was Perkins + Will of Dallas, TX; the CENTRIA products dealer/installer was National Panel Systems Inc. of Van Alstyne, TX; the contractor was MEDCO Construction of Dallas, TX. The total project measured 459,717 sq. ft. and was completed in January 2011.
