Alcoa Architectural Products’ (AAP) Reynobond Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) helped make it possible to achieve the dramatically sloping façade of the award-winning Seidman Cancer Center. Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the Center is one of only 12 freestanding cancer hospitals in the nation designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Cancer Center was designed according to the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED*) green building principles, and is registered for certification.

Designed by Cannon Design, a St. Louis, Missouri-based architectural firm, the 375,000 square-foot, 10-story hospital features 59,000 square feet of Reynobond Natural Brushed ACM on the exterior and interior building fascia, soffits and parapet panels. In addition to protecting the building envelope, these Reynobond panels were the only natural metal composite material on the market with the required 62” material width needed for fabrication of the “Ski Jump” façade.

The narrow site allocated for the hospital and its substantial program requirements virtually dictated that the hospital take on the form of a thick rectangular box. To incorporate large lobbies and treatment areas on the lower floors, the architects flared the west façade outward at the base – creating a big convex curve like the ramp of a very wide ski jump. Reynobond ACM materials are ideal for low- to high-rise applications, and can be roll-formed, cut, curved, bent or routed, or cut to form small- or large-radius curves, reverse curves, angles and other shapes not possible with traditional building materials – making it the perfect fit for this application.

The high percentage of recycled content in Reynobond Natural Brushed ACM makes it ideal for projects designed to LEED green building principles. Furthermore, the sleek, bold look of the natural brushed aluminum helps to define the building, creating a gateway to the campus.

The $260 million Seidman Cancer Center was completed in April 2011. The structure has received the American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum, Museum of Architecture and Design as well as the Award of Excellence in the Large Project – New Construction Category from The Cleveland Engineering Society.

Gilbane Building of Cleveland, Ohio, was the general contractor, Universe Cladding Solutions of St. Louis, Missouri, was the panel fabricator and Huron Valley Glass of Ypsilanti, Michigan, was the panel installer. This team worked closely with AAP to coordinate the fabrication and installation of the metal skin to ensure precise joint alignment.
