Completed in December 2010, the new Slidell Cancer Center in Slidell, LA, was designed to meet the region’s cancer treatment needs now and well into the future. Developed by Slidell Memorial Hospital, the $20 million, three-story project features 51,000 sq. ft. of space, with nearly one third dedicated to future use.

As is the norm with health care facilities, the building’s exterior design mixes materials that are warm and traditional, such as brick, with others that are contemporary and even high-tech, like glass and aluminum composite material. The result is a building that is inviting and comforting while at the same time looking every bit a destination for cutting-edge medical treatment.

The treatment center was designed by AE Design of Marietta, GA. The Aluminum composite material it ultimately used on the project was ALPOLIC from Mitsubishi Plastics Composites America Inc. of Chesapeake, VA.  Altech Panel Systems LLC of Cartersville, GA, fabricated almost 8,500 sq. ft. of the 4mm-thick, FR-cored material –featuring a Silver Metallic SMX paint finish—into panels for the project. The panels were then installed by Applicated Images of Brandon, MS.

“The Slidell Cancer Center is an excellent example of how a relationship between a panel fabricator and installer can work to everyone’s advantage, especially the owner and architect,” said George M. Farrish, on behalf of GMHORNE. The Jackson, MS-based company was the ALPOLIC dealer.

“This project involved some interesting geometry with the soffit and fascia curving and sweeping in two directions,” he continued. “Altech Panel Systems’ experienced engineers and project managers took this difficult situation in hand. They provided constant communication with GMHORNE and our installer, Applicated Images, enabling us to work through site conditions and challenges. We would not have been able to produce such an outstanding product without this very important relationship. Altech set the bar for professionalism and quality of product that we should all strive to meet. We look forward to many more projects with them.”

The new cancer treatment center is expected to attract patients from Louisiana, Mississippi and the Gulf South region. Services will include radiation therapy, including high-dose radiation brachytherapy, image-guided radiosurgery and radiation therapy, and sterotactic radiotherapy. The center will also have an infusion center, a full-time pharmacy, an appearance center and a cancer resource center.

The project’s general contractor was Citadell Builders of Metarie, LA.
