Founded 125 years ago as the Home of Mercy, Chicago’s Swedish Covenant Hospital has come a long way since the days of iron beds and wooden washstands. The latest modernization, completed in March 2012 under the direction of BSA Life Structures of Indianapolis, IN, included efforts to trim the maintenance costs and enhance the aesthetics of the non-profit, independent hospital. It was to those ends that ALPOLIC aluminum composite material was incorporated into the exterior renovation design.

Since its inception, Swedish Covenant has been dedicated to the physical, spiritual, and psychological needs of its patients. Serving the North and Northwest of Chicago, the hospital acts as an academic and community healthcare facility that offers an extensive list of medical programs, including cancer, cardiac, surgical, women’s health, and emergency services. From a staff of a few once upon a time, the hospital now boasts 2,200 employees, 550 physicians, and 250 volunteers.

The ALPOLIC ACM was fabricated and installed by Metal Design Systems Inc. of Cedar Rapids, IA and reflects the strides made by the hospital to become more sustainable. To conserve energy and reduce toxins, motion censors, mercury-free light fixtures, and green motors were installed throughout the hospital. Additionally, the roof features tiles made of light reflecting material that naturally prevent the building from overheating.

Approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of 4mm-thick, fire-rated ALPOLIC ACM FR, in Custom Brown, Custom White and Custom Tan colors were integrated into the design concept.

Handling the general contracting duties was Power Construction Company LLC.
