A world-renowned health care provider and insurer, Pittsburgh-based UPMC provides more care to the region’s most vulnerable citizens than any other health care institution. With the opening of a striking new $20 million outpatient facility in Ebensburg, PA, UPMC is bringing its world-class care to Cambria County residents—utilizing a highly energy-efficient exterior construction approach that proved to be faster, easier and more affordable than competing methods. Among the materials featured on the project are metal wall panels from IMETCO, finished with premium paints from Sherwin-Williams.
“This will be a hub for family practice and specialty care physician appointments, as well as extensive outpatient testing and therapy,” said Jerry Murray, president of UPMC Altoona and UPMC Bedford Memorial. “The new facility extends the clinical excellence of UPMC to residents of Cambria County and provides a convenient ‘one-stop’ option for care,” he added.
Ranked No. 12 in the prestigious U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals,” UPMC is recognized for inventing new models of accountable, cost-effective and patient-centered care. During development of the 3-story, 46,500-square-foot Ebensburg facility, the project team at CORE Architects likewise kept affordability and aesthetics in mind. To create a signature statement for UPMC with distinct visibility from the highway, the team sought an economical and functional solution utilizing color and material.
Simple in its overall form, the architecture of the building relies on a metal skin to create scale, texture and visual interest. Punctuated by bold and natural-colored architectural coatings, and designed using varying panel depths, the exterior metal panels provide style and relief to the otherwise flat building facades.
Constructed with over 20,000 square feet of SYNTHEON Accel-E Wall, Steel Thermal Efficient Panel (STEP) System, the exterior walls combine light-gauge metal stud framing and continuous insulation, to reduce building costs and time, while improving energy-efficiency. The exterior metal skin further utilizes IMETCO’s IntelliScreen Complete Rainscreen Wall System with Element Metal Panels coated in four shades of Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings Fluropon, its flagship 70% PVDF exterior architectural metal coating.
Adding a bold graphic appeal, Sherwin-William Coil Coatings in shades Georgian Brick (#161), Almond Suede (#185), Weathered Copper (#181) and Roman Copper (#155), were chosen to provide outstanding color retention and consistency, plus excellent overall adhesion and film integrity. The high-performing exterior metal coatings are proven to stand up against weathering for years to come.
Offering a warm welcome to patients and guests, UPMC Ebensburg delivers more convenient access to high-quality care, new job opportunities and comprehensive community support. Harnessing energy-efficient and cost-effective materials, the building soundly and structurally supports UPMC’s mission to serve its community through state-of-the-art patient care.
