The multi-level curved Field-Lok and sloping Dutch Seam metal roofing panels, installed on the Living Word Community Church in Red Lion, PA, caught the judges’ eyes. This resulted in first place for the category of commercial roofs in ATAS International’s project of the year awards for 2018.

Jeffrey A. Harris, RA, Principal of Jeffrey Harris Architect in Doylestown, PA, stated, “The Living Word Community project included a 30,000 square foot expansion onto an existing 90,000 square foot building. The original building was a very utilitarian design with concrete block exterior walls and flat roofs. The exterior design challenge included adding a significant amount of curb appeal to this existing building, and to bring more attention to the primary entrances. This was accomplished mainly with the use of sloping and curved standing seam metal roofing."

Hoe continued, "The church logo is an open Bible which became the inspiration for the exterior design of overlapping curved roofs. It is a very complicated roof structure with many odd angles and valleys, which is why ATAS’ Dutch Seam and curved Field-Lok panels were chosen for the standing seam roof specified. There was no doubt in my mind as the designer that ATAS would be able to accommodate the complexities of this roof design.”

The planned improvements to the church with this expansion project included more classrooms for younger children, older students, and adults, a prayer room, and small group rooms. As well, lobby space, offices, a coffee bar, and community area were added. Prior to the expansion, the offices were inadequate and scattered, which limited the effectiveness of staff working together efficiently. Doubling the space of the lobby increased the opportunities for community, with more seating arrangements and a visible welcome center.

The addition of the curved vaulted metal roof makes the church more visible from the road, which leads to an increased awareness of the church’s presence within the community. The hill in front of the building had been lowered, and the entrance road was redesigned to be much more inviting.

The 15”-wide Dutch Seam panels and the 16 ½”-wide convex curved Field-Lok panels installed on this church were manufactured in .032 aluminum, with a 70% PVDF finish in the medium bronze color. The panels were installed by Progressive Services, Inc. of Dover, PA, and the panels were purchased through ATAS’ distributor, Quality Roofing Supply of York, PA, a Beacon Roofing Supply Company.
