PPG Duranar™ coatings are among those featured on one of the most anticipated buildings of 2018 - the new Calgary Central Library in Calgary, Canada.

Designed by Snøhetta of Oslo, Norway, and DIALOG of Calgary, the library features a dynamic triple-glazed façade that incorporates more than 460 alternating polygonal panels of fritted glass and iridescent aluminum. The architects selected PPG Duranar coatings for the window frames and other extruded aluminum components to evoke snowflakes or ice cracking on a lake.

Hydro Portland, a member of the PPG CAP Certified Applicator Program™ that is located in Oregon, and Apel Extrusions of Calgary coated the finished metal in two PPG Duranar colors – standard Bright White and Broken Ice, a custom color topped by a pearlescent PPG Duranar clearcoat.

Based on a proven 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) formulation, PPG Duranar coatings have protected commercial buildings of every type for more than 50 years. Other global landmarks finished with PPG Duranar coatings include the Empire State Building in New York; the Louvre Pyramid in Paris; Shanghai World Financial Center in China; Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Located over railroad tracks near a light-rail station in Calgary’s fast-growing East Village neighborhood, the 240,000-square-foot library is designed to achieve LEED® certification at the Gold level by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
