The National World War II Museum tells the story of the American experience in the war that changed the world – why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today. Dedicated in 2000 as the National D-Day Museum and later renamed the National World War II Museum, the building celebrates the American Spirit, and the teamwork, optimism, courage and sacrifice of the men and women who fought on the battlefront and at supported the war effort at home.
The museum recently underwent an extensive, $300 million expansion, which included the construction of a $60 million addition. Designed by Voorsanger Mathes LLC and opened to the public on November 6, 2009, the addition’s centerpiece is the 250-seat Victory Theater. The state-of-the-art venue boasts a 120’-wide viewing screen and uses 4-D technology to immerse audience members in an epic presentation entitled Beyond All Boundaries.
The addition’s design makes extensive use of metal, including aluminum dovetail grilles from Ohio Gratings Inc. (OGi) of Canton, Ohio. Approximately 9,000 sq. ft. of the company’s grilles were used in various parts of the museum interior, including in the theater lobby. The grilles were supplied in two specified colors: Metallic Silver and Battleship Gray.
Dovetail is but one of many grille styles offered by OGi.The company’s grill frames are available in depths to 6” while the depths of the vertical and horizontal crossbars can be varied according to architectural taste.
OGi products are manufactured with at least 10% pre-consumer and 40% post-consumer scrap metal and are 100% recyclable at the end of their life span. They can be used to gain LEED credits and, depending upon application, improve building energy efficiency.
