With a name based on a supernatural raven from Danish folklore, Cedar Point's Valravn in Sandusky, Ohio is the tallest (223 feet), fastest (75 mph) and longest (3,415 feet) dive roller coaster in the world. The Valravn Roller Coaster Station design incorporated several aluminum panel profiles in three colors from ATAS International.
The project was named as an ATAS International 2016 Project of the Year winner in the commercial walls category.
ATAS panels used on the Valravn Roller Coaster Station included:
• CastleTop in Charcoal Grey, Slate Grey, and Champagne
• Belvedere Wave Panel in Charcoal Grey
• Belvedere 7.2” Rib in Charcoal Grey
• Opaline in Champagne
The CastleTop diamond-shaped metal shingles were chosen for their appearance as feathered siding - a tribute to the Valravn mythical bird. The Belvedere Wave Panels, Belvedere 7.2” Rib, and Opaline complement the sleek angles of the building.
Cedar Point’s raven-themed roller coaster is the newest addition to the park. It is the park’s first dive coaster, a special type of roller coaster characterized by extra-wide passenger trains and a 90-degree first drop. Valravn riders are suspended at the first drop for four seconds before being released straight down. Passengers travel at 75 mph as their feet dangle and then enter a massive inversion, a loop with a twist, causing riders to hang upside down at a record-breaking 165 feet. At a total ride time of two minutes and 35 seconds, the ride is not for the fainthearted.
One of the 13 amusement and water parks owned by Cedar Fair LP, Cedar Point is located on 364 acres overlooking Lake Erie. It opened in 1870 and is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the United States. The park has been called the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World” and features 71 rides, including 16 roller coasters.
The architect for this project was TRA of Cincinnati, OH. The metal panel installer was Lews Construction of Sandusky, OH. The metal panel distributor was Gordon Lumber of Huron, OH. The project owner is Cedar Fair LP of Sandusky, OH.
