The exterior of the Kellogg Arena and Convention Center in Battle Creek, MI had become unsightly and didn’t offer the inviting “curb appeal” needed to attract meetings and conventions. A 25-year-old panel had become rusty and in bad condition.

The architectural firm URS Corporation, Grand Rapids, MI, was awarded the challenge of designing the renovation and upgrade plans for the arena.

Approximately 15,000 sq. ft. of Metl-Span CFA-36 architectural flat insulated panels played a major role in the transformation. The old panel system was completely removed and replaced with Metl-Span panels finished in Polar White.

The Metl-Span system was installed by Architectural Glass & Metals, Inc., Byron Center, MI. AGM was consulted by the architect very early in the process and asked to recommend an efficient, economical solution. According to AGM’s David Sheasley, “There was initially talk about using aluminum but Metl-Span simply offered the best value for the desired design aesthetic. We recommended a standard module and standard color to maximize cost efficiency. The horizontal application looks great and it’s energy efficient and LEED compliant. The owner is thrilled!”

Mike Van Schelven, senior project designer for URS, agrees. “The Metl-Span polyurethane panel system met all of our performance criteria. We were able to turn an average-looking building into something that makes a strong design statement. It’s a ten-fold improvement. Better yet, Metl-Span was the most competitive on bid day.”

The CSM Group, Galesburg, MI served as construction manger for the project.
