Metl-Span insulated roof and wall panels achieved all three design objectives for the new Nanaimo Ice Centre project in Nanaimo, British Columbia. According to architect Mark Hentze of CEI Architecture, Vancouver, “The Metl-Span panels 1) clearly met our program goals, 2) provided significant aesthetic value and 3) met our budget requirements.” CEI is one of the leading recreation design firms in British Columbia.

Approximately 62,000 sq. ft. of Metl-Span CFR-42 roof panels and 32,000 sq. ft. of CF wall panels were utilized. All panels were finished in Desert Beige.

The use of Metl-Span on the pre-engineered building resulted from early involvement by representatives from Zero-Loc, Metl-Span’s exclusive distributor in Canada, with the design team. According to Conal Hancherow, Zero-Loc regional sales rep, “We’ve used Metl-Span on several other hockey arenas throughout Canada including the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, home of the Toronto Raptors NBA team and the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. We knew Metl-Span outperformed traditional standing seam roofs that often showed frost lines and sometimes allowed condensation that could cause rust. The design team was very open to considering a better way of doing things.”

Zero-Loc is headquartered in Vancouver and has additional offices in Brantford, Ontario and Seattle, WA.

The Nanaimo Ice Centre includes two hockey rinks seating 400 and 200 spectators plus locker rooms, refreshment areas, administrative offices and equipment areas.

CEI’s Mark Hentze led the design team that faced a challenging timeline. “The easy fabrication and installation of Metl-Span panels allowed us to close the roof quickly in order to stay on schedule with other interior work,” Hentze said. “In our rainy climate, getting under roof quickly is very important. This was our first experience using Metl-Span on a roof and it proved to be as good a solution as it is for walls. The panels provide great insulation value and are finished on both sides in a good range of colors. The wall panels integrated well with the curtainwall and blocks on the exterior and created a much more attractive building than the normal hockey arena that is typical throughout Canada. This one has a real ‘wow factor’ that has made it a showcase project.”

Installation of the Metl-Span panels was completed by Thermo Design Insulation, Vancouver. The general contractor was Task Management, Vancouver.
