The Ron De Lugo Federal Courthouse in the U.S. Virgin Islands underwent a major repair and replacement of its roof. The 57,872 sq. ft., three-story federal building is located just a stone’s throw from the ocean in a beautiful bay in St. Thomas. The corrosive saltwater environment was the major factor in specifying Petersen Aluminum panels for the retrofit.

Approximately 24,000 sq. ft. of Petersen’s Tite-Loc Plus Panels finished in Colonial Red were utilized. The .040 aluminum panels were installed over the existing screw-down steel roof using the Roof Hugger retrofit framing system. Installation of the Petersen panels was completed by Therma Seal Roof Systems, Lake Park, Fla.

Panel testing for the high wind uplifts was a significant factor in the selection of Petersen, according to Dave Landis, architectural/technical sales manager. “We used Miami-Dade NOA engineering information to show the architect that the .040 aluminum panels would exceed the 130 mph wind load requirements for the job,” he said.

Architectural design for the project was created by C.J. Quinones Engineering, San Juan, Puerto Rico. The general contractor was Energy Solutions Division of Schneider Electric Building, Richmond, Va. The Petersen distributor on the project was ABC Supply.
