Basin Electric Power Cooperative – Leland Olds Station

North Dakota Power Plant Is Clad In Insulated Metal Composite Panels From CENTRIA

The Leland Olds Station, located four miles southeast of Stanton, ND, is the first power plant for Basin Electric Power Cooperative - one of the largest electric generation and transmissions cooperatives in the United States, providing wholesale electricity to more than 2.8 million customers. The majority of electricity produced at the new plant is sent to substations for delivery to Basin Electric’s 136 member systems.

CENTRIA’s Versawall and Versapanel insulated metal composite panels were selected for the Leland Olds Station because of their outstanding performance features, as well as their superior benefits in terms of sustainability and aesthetics.

The Leland Olds Station project presented several unique challenges as 50 percent of the project was constructed during one of the worst North Dakota winters recorded in history. Versawall and Versapanel created a solution to the cold temperatures, wind and snow as both products are able to be installed in any type of weather. Because of the unique installation benefits of the lightweight panels, the contractor was able to install the products faster and easier, saving on time and construction costs.

Additionally, Versawall and Versapanel were chosen to ensure the new additions to the Leland Olds Station would succeed in the bitter North Dakota weather for years to come. With outstanding weather resistance due to double tongue-and-groove joinery, CFC-free foam insulation and thermal break between face and liner for energy savings, Versawall and Versapanel met the performance demands of the project. Both products also received Cradle to Cradle® Certification at the Silver Level.

The CENTRIA products provided yet another benefit in terms of aesthetics. Versawall and Versapanel, in medium and dark blue, provided long, uninterrupted sight lines for a smooth, contemporary exterior design. They also provided the architect with virtually unlimited possibilities in form, color and texture.

The project architect was Sargent & Lundy of Chicago, IL; the dealer/installer was Jamar Company of Duluth, MN; and the contractor was Alberici Constructors of St. Louis, MO. The project was completed in November 2009.

CENTRIA products used on this project were:

  • Versawall®. Square Feet: 197,257; Color: Medium Blue; Finish: Embossed Striated; Coating: Fluorofinish; Gauge: 24/24.

  • Versapanel®. Square Feet: 40,309; Color: Dark Blue; Finish: Embossed Planked; Coating: Fluorofinish; Gauge: 24/24.
