Capitol West

Morin Products Used On New Urban Landmark

Capitol West is a mixed-use infill development in downtown Madison, Wis. Designed by a team of five nationally acclaimed architects, it features an 11-story high-rise, townhomes, rowhouses and lofts. Products from Morin, A Kingspan Group Company, helped achieve the sustainable and aesthetic goals.

“The use of a variety metal panel types are a key component in the contemporary architectural themes exhibited at Capitol West,” says Nic Alexander, director of marketing at The Alexander Company, the Madison, Wis.-based developer specializing in urban preservation. “Through years of use, the Morin panels have held up superbly to all conditions.”

Capitol West utilized an extensive recycling and reuse effort during its deconstruction phase, achieving a 94 percent recycling rate and reusing an entire concrete and steel shell building for its 11-story condominium tower. Capitol West has become a new urban landmark in Madison and an aesthetic benchmark for urban developments throughout the country.

MORIN Exposed Fastener Metal Wall Panels are designed into every type of building today, from industrial manufacturing plants to Class A office buildings. The Capitol West Condo project chose 7,245 square feet of the 22-gauge Galvalume Morin C29 7/8 traditional sine wave C profile with its overlapping side joint design in Medium Silver Classic for the majority of the horizontal metal panel application.

The MORIN Integrity Series is an integrated concealed fastener wall panel system with an asymmetrical shape created by the well-known Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki in the early 1990’s. The common joint design allows for multiple panel integration. The Capitol West project called for 2,400 square feet of 22-gauge Galvalume Integrity Series Metal Wall Panel XC-12 in Light Silver Classic Color to slightly contrast the look of the Exposed Fastener panels.

An additional exposed fastener metal wall panel designed into the Capitol West project is Morin’s BR-28. MORIN fabricated approximately 4,500 square feet of 22-gauge Galvalume in a stunning Copper Classic II color. Installed in a horizontal orientation, it makes for an exceptional contrast of color. MORIN Mitered Corners further enhanced the visual experience. Miter-seam style corners utilize structurally bonded construction and because they are fabricated from the same material as the adjacent panels, a color match is assured.

Installation of the MORIN panels was handled by SRS Roofing and Sheet Metal of Waterford, Wis.

“Our only real challenge was access,” says Brad Decker, sheet metal estimator for SRS Roofing and Sheet Metal. “Because of the height of the building we were suspended down from the roof, like a window washer, instead of using a boom lift. We’ve worked with Morin products before, so the installation went well. We’ve installed MORIN products on other projects and have more coming up.”

Rooftop terraces and gardens, as well as pedestrian mews, help to create an urban neighborhood just two blocks from the Wisconsin State Capitol. Encompassing an entire city block, the site boasts a 151-room Hyatt Place hotel and 92,500 square feet of commercial space. Additionally, Capitol West contains 164 condominiums with high-quality finishes, views of Lakes Mendota and Monona and 92,500 square feet of commercial space.
