Sheet Metal Contractor Uses Metals From Sheffield Metals International For Challenging Project

Call it the Dutch connection. An eye doctor residing in both the United States and Holland decided to renovate and expand an existing medical office complex in Dothan, AL. Preferring the style of the buildings in Holland to those in the U.S., the doctor commissioned a Dutch firm to consult with a U.S. architect on the design overhaul of the project, Eye Center South.

Saliba Construction of Dothan was tapped to handle the project’s general contracting duties and helped coordinate the replication of features that both the owner and architect wanted the building to have. To help it turn architectural ideas into construction reality the G.C. enlisted the services of Marty Robbins Roofing Co. Inc., also of Dothan, and Sheffield Metals International, Sheffield Village, OH.

Marty Robbins Roofing is a multi-disciplined contractor that lists architectural sheet metal fabrication as one of its specialties. That expertise was required because of the complexity of the work required.

“We at Marty Robbins Roofing, our sheet metal shop, and the GC worked hand in hand to include and/or adapt as many of these features as possible,” said Ricky Gray, a sales representative at Marty Robbins Roofing.

The firm covered the interior and exterior sides of the project’s mansard roofing with 1-1/2”-high standing seam metal roof panels. They were formed at the job site from steel coil supplied by Sheffield Metals International. The material used for the exterior panels was 24-gauge Galvalume-coated steel with a Pre-Weathered Galvalume COOLR® PVDF paint finish. The panels on the inside were formed from 24-gauge Galvalume-coated steel with a mill finish.

Used in conjunction with the site-formed metal roofing was an array of shop-fabricated metal components. Those items included 8” Dentil Soffit, louvers in three sizes, chimney caps and freeze board. All the soffit and edge detailing was created from 24-gauge Galvalume in an Almond color.

In completing its role on the project, Marty Robbins Roofing applied the single-ply membrane roofing featured on all the flat roof areas.

The project's architect of record was J. Michael Lee of Dothan. Consulting on the design was Willem Weultjes from Zutphen, the Netherlands.
