Great Pond Family Compound Home

Skilled Contractor Continues Tradition Of Using Englert Metal Roofing On Homes In Exclusive Resort Community

There were plenty of challenges associated with the installation of metal roofing on one of the newest homes in Belgrade Lakes, ME, but nothing the project’s accomplished metal roofing fabricator/installer couldn’t handle. C.O. Beck & Sons of Waterville, ME, installed the roofing on the 6,000 sq. ft. home, like so many of the homes in the exclusive resort area. And as is routinely the case with Beck & Sons’ projects, the contractor’s roofing of choice was Englert job-site rollformed metal.

The home was completed in May 2012 and is part of a cluster of summer homes and cottages that comprise a family vacation compound on Great Pond. Great Pond is in an area not far from Augusta, the state capital, and served as the inspiration for the 1981 film, On Golden Pond.

The house features 5,700 square feet of Englert Series 1300 double-lock standing seam roofing. The 20”-wide, Forest Green roof panels were formed from 24-gauge Galvalume-coated steel.

The project’s biggest challenge, according to Bill Beck, vice president and co-owner of C.O. Beck & Sons, was the intricate detail and layout, especially on the two-tiered and tapered gazebo roof. Panels for the gazebo were hand-cut and fabricated onsite using an 8' manual brake. The home also features a radius eave detail that intersected the gazebo, requiring the kind of custom fabrication and craftsmanship C.O. Beck & Sons is noted for. Beck points out that other parts of the roof were constructed with cantilevered rafter tails, giving the home the look of a lake cottage in keeping with the entire camp setting. Other special roof accents—the likes of which are best left to highly skilled contractors—included precision-cut panels over a triangle-shaped dormer, associated "choke" valley sections, and upper-level valleys that were laid out to find the tricky balance between function and aesthetics.
