Margrethekirken Church Renovation

Famous Landmark's Steeple Re-Clad In REYNOBOND® ACM

The Margrethekirken is one of the most famous modern church buildings in all of Denmark. Located in the city of Aalborg and completed in the 1970s, this architecturally impressive place of worship was designed by Ole Knudsen, MAA of Knudsen & Ostergaard a/s of Denmark.

The type of insulation/moisture sealant used at the time of the building's original construction was proven later to be ineffective. And it didn't hold up on the Margrethekirken either. For years moisture seeped into the structure, causing rot and mold on the wooden beams to the point the stability of the entire structure was threatened. In 2005, following the recommendations of an inspector from the church authorities, the congregational committee authorized an $8 million Danish kroner (approximately $1,688,000.) repair project.

The restoration of the 2,000 square meter roof was complicated. With an angle of 60 degrees, the workers could not stand on the roof and the structure itself was too frail to support scaffolding. The solution was to erect 28-meter-high mast towers that followed the contours of the roof yet never touched it. It was from a platform attached to the masts that workers representing AE Stalmontage a/s installed 3,300 square meters of Reynobond® Aluminum Composite Material. The 4mm-thick,polyethylene-cored material was provided with a Traffic White Duragloss R5000 paint finish to match the church's bell tower. Beneath the panels, a new moisture barrier and underplates were installed, ensuring the problems of the past are not repeated. Phonix Tag Nordjylland a/s of Copenhagen, Denmark, was the contractor on the project and worked with Saint-Gobain Isove a/s of Vamdrup, Denmark, to handle the fabrication and installation of those key components.

The Reynobond® panels were fabricated by the installing contractor from material manufactured by Alcoa Architectural Products. The company offers a complete range of exterior and interior claddings, along with corporate identity solutions. Reynobond material is available in various thicknesses and finishes, including with a KEVLAR® impact resistant finish as well as stainless steel and zinc.
